1 John 1:8-10

In a society where appearance is everything, it is easy to fool people about who we are. But we don’t fool God. Only as we are truthful with ourselves and with God about our sin will we find a God who is faithful, who will completely cleanse us from sin. John says to do anything less is to call God a liar.

John says confession is the key to walking in the light. He begins both 1:8 and 1:9 with the word “if.” Both deceiving of ourselves and complete cleansing are choices. We must choose which will mark our lives.
