Ecclesiastes 5:13-14
Money can be a destructive idol. Paul describes it as a “snare” (1 Timothy 6:9) and “the root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). In today’s reading, we see two scenarios of the destructive nature money has on us. You can either hoard your riches or see one wrong move obliterate what you have saved up. One side lives in misery, anxious about protecting what they have, while the other side foolishly loses what they have in pursuit of more. Both will leave you trapped and ultimately feeling empty. Idols are a weak foundation that produce a false sense of security. Idols can never support the weight of our hopes, dreams, comfort, or security. Only a firm foundation on Christ can fully support our lives.
