Haggai 1:2-9, Matthew 6:31-34
After 50 years in exile and seeing how God had provided, you would think the Israelites would be eager to complete the building of the temple. Instead, for all the faithfulness God displayed, their enthusiasm dwindled as they settled back into their homes and even faced resistance from neighboring people in their attempts to build. For 16 years, the temple remained nothing more than a foundation! Enter Haggai. Through Haggai, God reignited the resolve of his people to continue building his temple by renewing their focus on what was most important—not a building, but on God himself!
