2 Peter 1:16-21
After emphatically exhorting Christians not to forget the truth of Christ, Peter recounts his experience on Mount Hermon where he witnessed firsthand Jesus’ transfiguration into God alongside the prophets Moses and Elijah (see Matthew 17:2-11). He used this encounter to validate the words of the prophets as truth spoken directly from God through the Holy Spirit.
Take a moment to read Psalm 119:41-48. With Peter’s life in mind as I read 119:46, “I will also speak of your testimonies before kings and shall not be ashamed,” I couldn’t help but think of Peter boldly standing before the Sanhedrin, filled with the Holy Spirit, and proclaiming the truth of Christ shouting, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”
The word “transfiguration” means “metamorphosis.” Metamorphosis is change on the outside that comes from the inside. The Good News tells us Peter’s life was the product of transfiguration, and what is even better is that our lives can be transfigured as well if we will completely surrender ourselves to the power of the Holy Spirit.
