Philippians 3:8-11

Paul considers all of those credentials a loss because has discovered something so much greater in Jesus. In 3:8, Paul talks about a new knowledge he has because of his relationship with Jesus. His old life is not only inferior, but it is garbage compared to what he has with Jesus. Paul has a new righteousness that doesn’t hinge upon his goodness or his following the law but is the righteousness he has because he belongs to Christ (3:9). He has a power that comes from Jesus—the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work in Paul’s life (3:10). Paul’s life was changed in a drastic way—one can see how the power of Jesus was necessary for such a turnaround. Paul experienced a new kind of fellowship as he participated in the sufferings of Jesus (3:10). And Paul is humbly hopeful he will attain to the resurrection from the dead. Paul knows the power that is and has been at work in his life is not his own. And all of his religious achievements—some of which he was lucky in his birth and others he earned—are all garbage compared to the gains of being in Christ.
