Sunday
Ecclesiastes 4:15-16, Acts 13:36

Solomon determined position and leadership are also meaningless. To illustrate this, Solomon cites the succession of kings. A new king replaced the old, a man who had no position or wealth. No one is irreplaceable. Just as quickly as power and position are earned, they can be taken away.

Solomon also notes that though they followed the new king, the people weren’t pleased with his leadership. Even though the king was wise, he wasn’t what the people wanted him to be. The saying goes, “You can’t please all the people all of the time.” More truthfully, some people can’t be pleased at all. Life lived seeking to please others or fulfill their expectations is meaningless as well. Chasing after the wind will keep you busy, but you’ll never be finished. And you’ll have nothing to show for it.

Acts 13:36 gives us an answer to this meaninglessness. It says, “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep.” As followers of Christ, any position of leadership we are given should be seen as an opportunity not to advance our own purposes, but the purposes of God.

Spend a moment in prayer yielding your positions of influence to the Lord.
