Acts 16:14-15
The first convert in Philippi (in all of Europe for that matter) was a woman named Lydia. She was from an area famous for its dyeing works. Lydia was wealthy. Lydia was a Gentile. She responded to Paul’s comments concerning Jesus and became a faithful follower of Christ.
Some observations about the church in Philippi include the following:
The majority of its members were Gentile—the least Jewish of all the churches Paul founded.
Note the cosmopolitan makeup of the church as evidenced by its first converts.
By and large, the congregation was poor and persecuted.
These Philippian believers were generous and mission-minded.
The church was loyal to Paul and its leaders included women.
