Matthew 6:25-34
Anxiety is often a matter of misplaced focus. It happens when we compare our problems with the resources we have available to solve those problems. When we don’t have enough resources, anxiety begins to creep in. These problems then dominate our thoughts, time, energy, and efforts. They steal our focus. Imagine Peter’s worry while walking out to Jesus on the water! Peter gets distracted, takes his eyes off Jesus, and then begins to sink as fear grips him (see Matthew 14:22-33). Jesus invites us to reorder our priorities. First, he tells us not to worry (6:25). Then, he tells us to focus on what matters most, his kingdom. Everything else flows from that. Hebrews 12:2 encourages us to do this by “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith.” When Jesus is our focus, anxiety gives way to peace.
