Saturday
A visit with C. S. Lewis

The assumption behind the “I want to find the truth that works for me” idea is that I am the judge of God. God is not my judge. C. S. Lewis commented on this mindset in his book God in the Dock where the dock is the place the accused person sits when brought to trial: “In talking to modern unbelievers, the greatest barrier I have met is the almost total absence from the minds of my audience of any sense of sin. The ancient person approached God (or even the gods) as the accused person approaches his judge. For the modern person, the roles are reversed. The person is the judge: God is in the dock. The modern person is quite a kindly judge: if God should have a reasonable defense for being the god who permits war, poverty, and disease, the person is ready to listen to the defense. The trial may even end in God’s acquittal. But the important thing is that Humans are on the Bench and God is in the dock” (244-45).
