I want you to consider yourself to be a scribe. A scribe was one who meticulously copied Scripture. In our day, we take the printed page for granted. The printing press did not come about until around AD 1450. Up until that time, someone had to write out words and messages by hand.

Think about the Bible you hold in your hand. God did not send his Word to us in printed form. Over the centuries, faithful scribes reproduced the scrolls that contain the very words of God. So, over the next several weeks, our Daily Bible Readings will be written by you, the scribe.

Don’t panic—you don’t have to write commentary. You don’t have to come up with devotional thoughts. Your task is to write the words. Copy the passage word for word. Each week will focus on a theme. Read the passage prayerfully. Ask God to use the passage to strengthen and encourage you. Then write the Word. Take a journal or notebook and write out the passage, using the translation of your choice. As you write, look for that week’s theme. You will see it in every passage for the week. Then, our worship experience on Sunday will focus on that week’s theme.

What will Writing the Word accomplish?

Your penmanship will improve.

You will retain many of these verses by memory.

You will learn and grow in your understanding of the Bible. Devotional thoughts and commentary are helpful, but there is no substitute for pure Scripture.

1 Peter 2:19-23

2:19 For this finds favor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly.
2:20 For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God.
2:21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps,
2:22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth;
2:23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;
