Devotions written by Dr. Brad Williamson

Ecclesiastes 2:1-3

Solomon, the “preacher” and human author of Ecclesiastes, was the son of the great king of Israel, David. After David died, Solomon became king. Solomon wanted Israel to continue in the great path his father had established. Solomon wanted to lead Israel with wisdom and spirituality. One night, God appeared to Solomon in a dream. Solomon asked God to give him wisdom so he could lead Israel in following God (2 Chronicles 1:7-10). Solomon’s request was pleasing to God, and God honored his request giving him wisdom and much more, including honor and wealth.

Solomon became known as the wisest man in the world, with great influence on other nations and kings. At some point, however, Solomon got distracted and drifted away from God. He searched for purpose and meaning. In his wandering, Solomon tried everything he could think of to get out of the brokenness his life had become. Near the end of his life, Solomon looked back on his life and wrote about his journey. Maybe Solomon’s life experiences—including his mistakes—can help you in your search for meaning and purpose. Chapter 2 describes Solomon’s wandering journey.

In America today, many choose to wander away from God, seeking their own pleasure. The journey is dangerous and many lose their life along the way.
