IN THE COMPANY OF GREAT DOUBTERS

TuesdayMatthew 14:22-33
Peter was a doubter. He had seen Jesus do amazing things and had heard him teach dozens of times. But when Jesus came walking on the water, Peter expressed doubt twice. First, he isn’t even sure Jesus is who he says he is: “Lord, if it’s you…” (14:28). Then, when he saw the wind, he let fear step into the place of his faith and started to sink. Jesus wanted Peter to have faith and trust him completely, but Peter is human. Peter is broken. Peter is distracted. And Jesus knows it all. But in the midst of his doubt, Jesus helped Peter. Jesus held out his hand, caught him, and helped him back into the boat. Jesus used Peter’s willingness to step out, and even the process of his doubt and resulting reassurance, to bolster the faith of Peter and all those who watched. God is good to us, even in the midst of our questions and fears.
