Thursday – Proverbs 1:19; 15:27; 28:25
Miriam Webster defines greed as a selfish and excessive desire for more of something (such as money) than is needed. Pastor and author Tim Keller states a “mark of a greedy heart is that it does not merely enjoy wealth but has come to trust in it.” As we read yesterday, the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil that leads to ruin, destruction, and many griefs. In these proverbs, we see just a few examples that highlight greed’s destruction. We see greed stirs up anger and bitterness (28:25), brings ruin to one’s family (15:27), and even kills (1:19). We have seen these truths realized again and again in those who put their faith in money. The remedy to greed is trust in the Lord. The author of Hebrews writes in 13:5, “Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.”
