I want you to consider yourself to be a scribe. A scribe was one who meticulously copied Scripture. In our day, we take the printed page for granted. The printing press did not come about until around AD 1450. Up until that time, someone had to write out words and messages by hand.

Think about the Bible you hold in your hand. God did not send his Word to us in printed form. Over the centuries, faithful scribes reproduced the scrolls that contain the very words of God. So, over the next several weeks, our Daily Bible Readings will be written by you, the scribe.

Don’t panic—you don’t have to write commentary. You don’t have to come up with devotional thoughts. Your task is to write the words. Copy the passage word for word. Each week will focus on a theme. Read the passage prayerfully. Ask God to use the passage to strengthen and encourage you. Then write the Word. Take a journal or notebook and write out the passage, using the translation of your choice. As you write, look for that week’s theme. You will see it in every passage for the week. Then, our worship experience on Sunday will focus on that week’s theme.

Your penmanship will improve.

You will retain many of these verses by memory.

You will learn and grow in your understanding of the Bible. Devotional thoughts and commentary are helpful, but there is no substitute for pure Scripture.
