Matthew 21:12-17; Mark 11:15-18
Jesus’ actions in the temple foretold the future of the structure. God’s temple had become corrupt and had been used to widen the gap between those who were wealthy and held positions and those who were poor and marginalized. Jesus’ death and resurrection would render the temple useless (as it had been created for the purpose of sacrifice and daily connection to God). Jesus’ trip to the temple demonstrated God’s judgment on the temple and on the society as a whole. The kingdom operating on earth was different from God’s kingdom, and God’s kingdom was coming to turn it all upside down.
