Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 1:1-11
Over the next two days, we will read about Jesus’ triumphal entry from all four gospels. Jesus came into Jerusalem, along with the crowds, to celebrate the Passover. He would have made his way from Jericho (the lowest place on the face of the earth at 800 feet below sea level), through the Judaean desert, all the way to Jerusalem (which was 2500 feet above sea level). The towns were only 16 miles apart so the climb was steep, hot, and dusty. You can imagine the relief when they finally caught sight of Jerusalem and the rich vegetation on the Mount of Olives. They were here to celebrate the escape from slavery in Egypt, but Jesus knew he would be the ultimate Passover sacrifice and rescue.
