Wednesday
1 Kings 11:9-13

As Southerners we all are familiar with the expression, “He’s gotten too big for his britches.” This phrase was first seen in print in 1835 by none other than Davy Crockett when he wrote An Account of Col. Crockett’s Tour to the North and Down East. He wrote, “I myself was one of the first to fire a gun under Andrew Jackson. I helped to give him all his glory. But I liked him well once: but when a man gets too big for his britches, I say goodbye.”

Solomon began his reign as King of Israel with such promise, but he definitely got too big for his britches. As Solomon reached old age, God decided it was time to knock him back down to size and let his “highness” know that because of his disobedience, he was going to face some very dire consequences. It is in the shadow of these consequences that Ecclesiastes was written.
