Philemon 4-7
In both pagan and Christian letters of the first centuries, the salutation was followed by an expression of thanksgiving and a prayer. Philemon has been faithful in serving Christ and has been an encouragement to Paul. Paul prays for Philemon’s relationship with Christ to be deepened and the implication is that this maturity would find expression in Philemon’s treatment of Onesimus.
