Mark 2:23-28
“Harvesting grain on the Sabbath? Another lawless faux pas, Jesus. Won’t you tell your disciples, already?” Jesus cited the example of David and his friends eating consecrated bread reserved for only the priests. In other words, the spirit of the law, not its letter, is what’s most important. How ironic! The Pharisees lectured Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath, on keeping the Sabbath! Jesus once again turned everything they thought they knew about God and his requirements upside down.
Are you conflicted between the spirit and the letter of the law? Are you holding to the standards of Christ or to religious tradition? We should never compromise the standard of Christ. But if we find we’re holding to religious tradition, let’s ask God to free us.
