Deuteronomy 6:4-9
Perhaps Ezra read from today’s passage when he stood before the people. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 is known as the “Shema.” This Hebrew word is translated “Hear.” This is the Jewish confession of faith, recited daily by the most devoted. Jesus understood the importance of these words (Matthew 22:37-38).
“The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!” In a world filled with idols and pagan temples, these words reminded Israel they served the one true God.
