Wednesday – 1 Thessalonians 5:17
“[T]he time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer; and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several persons are at the same time calling for different things, I possess God in as great tranquility as if I were upon my knees at the blessed sacrament.” — Brother Lawrence
The words “This is God’s will for you” appear very few times in Scripture. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 is one. Among being joyful and giving thanks in all circumstances, Christ-followers are commanded to pray continually. But is this even possible? Doesn’t God know how busy life is right now?! The answer to both these questions is yes.
Unceasing, continual prayer is possible. In his book Prayer, Richard Foster suggests practical ways to make constant prayer a reality. First, Foster says we develop an outward discipline. Using visual or mental cues, we can develop a rhythm of prayer. As we drive in the school zone, we’re reminded to pray for safety for our children and educators. As we fold the clothes of each family member, we can voice specific prayers for them. As these habits form, they become part of our subconscious. Foster says from here, prayer moves into the heart and becomes a part of who we are.
What rhythms of prayer can you build into your routine? How can you practice God’s presence in a greater way today?
