Paul got off to a good start in 4:10, then began backtracking: “Not that I speak from want . . .”
If 4:12 offers the current scene any good advice, it’s the fact that prosperity can be a source of discontent. How much is enough? The law of diminishing returns means that the more one has, the more one desires.
Paul did not live at the expense of his converts. Though financial support was appropriate, Paul refused it (1 Corinthians 9:12; 2 Thessalonians 3:9).
