Friday
1 John 3:1-3

“Be Like Mike” was an advertising campaign Gatorade released in 1992 featuring one of the most beloved professional basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan. The spot featured highlights from Jordan’s career along with children trying to emulate him on the basketball court to a very catchy tune. But as I was reading the lyrics to this jingle, I became very convicted. How many times in my life have I aspired to be like someone else, solely based on fame, wealth, beauty, or some special ability? How do my aspirations to be like another human compare to my desire to be like Christ?

Take a few moments and ponder the highlights of Jesus’ life. Think about the life he led and the words he spoke. How well do your actions and your words compare to Jesus? I know that thought is intimidating, just like it would be if we found ourselves playing a pick-up game with Michael Jordan even now in his “old age.”

No matter who our human idols may be, we can never truly be like them simply because they can never take up residency inside of us. But we can be like Christ. Galatians 2:20 tells us that through the Holy Spirit, Jesus can and will live in us if we allow him to.
