1 Thessalonians 2:9-12
Most Greeks despised manual labor. That’s why one owned slaves—they performed these menial tasks. Yet, Paul was not above paying his own expenses. He was willing to do anything so as not to be dependent upon the Thessalonians.
Paul determined to set a good example. Keep in mind, he spent little time in Thessalonica—perhaps three weeks or a little longer. His words imply the fierce criticism he faced from his detractors.
