Israel learned over the centuries following David and Solomon that disobedience in her king always brought the nation to ruin. But the godly remembered God had promised the throne of David would be established forever. So they came to see there must be a son of David coming who would fulfill the conditions of the covenant. If God stuck by his word, he would have to raise up a righteous, obedient son of David to take the throne.
