Romans 8:29
In giving the title Everlasting Father, Isaiah isn’t saying Jesus is the Father. Everlasting Father is Jesus’ character, not his person in the Trinity. In the Trinity, Jesus is the Son. But as one God, Jesus is also the Everlasting Father. If this confuses you, you’re in good company. Believers in the early church struggled with this concept as well.
Simply put, the doctrine of the Trinity means there is one God with three distinct persons. And each person of the Trinity has always been; one didn’t come from the other, which makes words like “father” and “son” confusing. But as we understand the relationship of the Trinity, it helps us understand the relationship we are to have with God. Jesus came to demonstrate a father’s love to all those who would become God’s children. Jesus is the Son to show the relationship we are to have with God. Jesus is the “firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”
Think again of the Christ-child in the manger. Imagine seeing the infant godhead with your own eyes. Now spend time thanking God that someday soon you will see him face to face—this time a Conquering King of kings—all of his mysteries made known!
