Mission:

The Oasis, an Early to Mid-Stage Alzheimer’s/ Dementia Program is an outreach ministry of First Baptist Church of Lewisville. This program provides a meeting place for adults with early to mid stage Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias.  Meetings will combine socialization, physical movement, music and other memory stimulating activities in a safe and comfortable environment.  Trained volunteers will lead the group with 1 to 1 ratio of volunteers to participants.

An oasis is defined as “a refuge, as from work or stress; a haven”.  We are providing a safe refuge for the person diagnosed with dementia as well as a worry free refuge for the caregiver.  This program will allow caregivers a 4 hour window to attend to their personal needs with the assurance that their loved one is safe and well cared for.

Date and Time:

We meet Thursdays from 10am-2pm at First Baptist Church of Lewisville in the Fellowship Center.

Criteria for Participation

  • Diagnosis of Early to Mid Stage Alzheimer’s, other dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment
  • Independently Mobile
  • Able to handle all self care needs (continent/ able to use bathroom by themselves)
  • Able to verbalize needs
  • Able to participate in group activities
  • Not exhibiting aggressive behaviors
  • Not exhibiting wandering behaviors

Each individual will visit the group on a trial basis for the first time to see if they can benefit from and participate in the group. After the first meeting I will call the caregiver to discuss how the meeting went and to determine admission.

Volunteers Needs:

We are looking for dedicated, enthusiastic and positive volunteers that are ready to jump in and engage with our wonderful participants. I promise after working with this group The Oasis will become the best part of your week! We need volunteers who can dedicate 2-4 Thursdays a month from 10am-2pm to work with our participants.

Do you enjoy leading an exercise, music or craft activity? We also need volunteers that can come in for 20-30 minutes on Thursdays to plan and lead an activity with our group.

FBC Lewisville provides a Caregiver Support Group for those taking care of a loved one with Alzheimer's or a related dementia.

This group meets on the first Friday of every month, 10am-11:30am, in room 103.

This group provides emotional, educational and social support, as well as help participants develop methods and skills to solve daily problems that arise being a caregiver of someone with dementia. We seek to encourage caregivers to maintain their own personal, physical and mental health.

No registration required.
