Ecclesiastes 2:4-9
Solomon first sought worldly pleasure. But pleasure didn’t get Solomon out of his brokenness, so he turned to his wealth. Perhaps amassing great possessions and property would bring purpose to his life. Once again, Solomon learned that his own efforts (apart from God) did nothing to fill the void that was in his heart. It may have brought worldly fame, but it did not take him out of his brokenness. Solomon later wrote Psalm 127. The first verse of this song says, “Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain.” Solomon ultimately learned the only way to escape brokenness: the LORD.
