Wednesday – Luke 16:1-14
This is one of those parables you might have to read a couple of times to see what is going on. In 16:1-9, a crooked manager loses his job because he took advantage of his position and ran up huge losses. In response, the manager goes and reduces the debts of those who owed his master. He didn’t do this out of generosity or even spite for losing his job. He did it out of self-interest, in hopes of gaining favor with debtors that they might help him when he is in need. Surprisingly enough, the master commends the manager for his dealings and savviness. In 16:10-13, Jesus teaches again on something we have already heard, meaning we really need to pay attention and take it to heart. Be faithful and a good steward with everything God gives to you, having the mindset to build up the kingdom of God. In all things, God looks at our hearts and measures our motives and intentions. Notice what Jesus says to the Pharisees who found themselves on the wrong side of this parable: “What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.” Let’s work to be found on the right side of Jesus’ illustration.
