A visit with C. S. Lewis
C. S. Lewis gave attention to the consequences of letting life’s cares swallow up what is most important to us. In his book The Screwtape Letters, a senior-level demon writes to his demon apprentice. “We must picture hell as a state where everyone is perpetually concerned about his own dignity and advancement, where everyone has a grievance, and where everyone lives the deadly serious passions of envy, self-importance, and resentment” (ix).
In his novel The Great Divorce, Lewis describes the divide between heaven and hell. “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘Thy will be done.’ All that are in Hell choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. To those who knock it is opened” (72-73).
