Kingdom Come: Christmas 2020

We typically have to slow down for Advent. Life is so busy, crazy, full we can miss the meaning of the season if we don’t slow down enough to pay attention. So many parties. So many traditions. So many things to check off the “to do” list.

This year is different. Maybe you don’t have all the parties on your calendar. School performances and parties are simpler. Traditions may look different. Maybe we won’t have to fight against the busy like usual … but perhaps we fight something else this year.

I know I speak for most of us—I’m done with 2020! I’m ready for this year to be over. So much struggle. So much loss. So much division. So much brokenness. Can we just turn the page already? Can we just move on to 2021 and bid 2020 a farewell? Perhaps the biggest enemy of Advent this year isn’t the busyness but the fact that so many of us just want to get through the season. We want to just numb out, get it over with, just survive. We could easily move through the remaining weeks of this year and completely miss the anticipation of the greatest arrival—that of Baby Jesus.

So, I want to encourage you to create the space and time and make the effort to be PRESENT in the days remaining in this year. Even in the brokenness, the grief, the stress, the anxiety, commit to being present. Read along with us. KINGDOM COME is a group of readings that follows threads through Scripture—from Old to New Testament—showing us/telling us WHY JESUS CAME. He brought a new Kingdom. But what are the marks of this new Kingdom? I believe we will quickly see Jesus’ Kingdom came precisely for days like 2020 … he came for the anxious, the broken, the ones in darkness, and the ones who grieve.

2020 will go down as memorable in all the wrong ways. Let’s commit to making Christmas 2020 memorable in all the right ways.
