Many churches today are still operating on the 1950’s model of church that says, “Bring your child to us and we will teach them all they need to know to live the Christian life.” Simply put, this is unbiblical. These verses in Deuteronomy give us God’s plan for the spiritual training of children in families. This week in our daily Bible readings, we will seek to unpack this very important passage of Scripture. In 6:5-6, parents are told to “Love the Lord with all their heart, soul and strength” and that God’s commandments are to be on our hearts. If our children are going to be people of faith, we must first be people who love God with all we are. Also, God’s commands should be such a part of us that they are literally on our hearts.
These two verses remind me of the instructions given to parents riding with their children on an airplane. The rule is that if the cabin depressurizes, parents are to put on their oxygen mask first, and then put on their child’s mask. Similarly, we must possess and live faith first. Then, and only then, will we be able to share faith with our children.
What about you? How is your love for the Lord showing in your life? Are you seeking to follow God’s commands? Ask God to show you any area of your life that needs to be changed before you seek to teach your child.
