Week 3—Deepen Internal Values

Saturday
1 Corinthians 12:27–13:3

This week the Scriptures have taught us the keys to a deeper walk with Christ are Bible study, prayer, and community with other believers. Today, Paul goes a step further and says it is time to let the overflow of this relationship spill into the lives of others through serving in love. At the end of the twelfth chapter of 1 Corinthians, we find a foundational truth about service: Everyone who has a relationship with Christ has been given a spiritual gift, and there is an essential need for every member of the body to function as God intended. This is a mandate to all Christ-followers to not only realize his or her spiritual gift but to also use it as intended for the purpose of building up the entire body.

Then Paul goes another step further. How are we to serve? The answer is found in two words: in love. In fact, he says serving others with an attitude of love, in a spirit of love, and with a motive of love is “the most excellent way.” Jesus commands us to love. Love is an action. Love is intentional. Love requires effort and purpose. Without love, our gifts and service are nothing. It is love—“the most excellent way”—that makes our service and spiritual gifts useful.
