Do you know it has been five years since FBCL started serving the teen parents in our area? God has developed an incredible love story between the church and these teens, and I stand in awe at the way he has provided and the way he has changed lives. As the holidays approach, we have some big needs for our ministry. But before I tell you how you can help, I want to give you a glimpse into what we do each week and why.
We plan our weekly time together around four purposes. First, we want every teenager to know our love for her (or him). There is no judgment, no lectures, only acceptance and love. We feel this way about the young people because Jesus feels this way about us. We tell them they are treasured by Jesus Christ. Our primary purpose and desire is to see each of them in a relationship with him.
Second, we meet physical needs when we are able. The parents and children are given 20 diapers and a meal each Wednesday they attend. These parents have many physical needs we cannot meet, but we prayerfully consider each request and are often able to connect them to resources in our church and community.
Third, we desire to equip these parents with life skills. We bring in speakers to cover various topics such as fitness, nutrition, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, adoption, interviewing skills, and college preparation, just to name a few. This Wednesday, we have a teacher from Flower Mound HS coming to talk to them about finances and living off of a cash budget. They will leave with the tools to use cash and the envelope system. We want our guys and girls to finish school so they will be in a better position to provide for their families.
And finally, we want each teen parent to be connected to and part of a mentoring relationship. There is no greater way to minister to people than to love them so much, you are willing to walk through life alongside them. This is what our mentors do best.
So how can you help this holiday season?
• GIFT CARDS: Right now we are collecting cash gifts to purchase gift cards for our girls to shop with their mentors for their children for Christmas. The teen parents are able to earn these gifts by attending regularly throughout the fall semester. We would greatly appreciate cash gifts marked “TOMS” on your offering envelope
• THANKSGIVING MEALS: We will be delivering Thanksgiving meals to our TOMS and their families again this holiday. If you would be interested in cooking a meal and delivering it to a family, we would be grateful. This is a tangible way to serve our teen parents but also to SHOW their families the love of Christ. I’ll be sitting at a table in the atrium the next few weeks taking sign-ups for meals.
