15 Days on Giving

October 31 – 1 Kings 18:30-35

In reading this very well-known Bible story, it is very easy to focus on the miracle and overlook the sacrifice. In 17:1, Elijah announced, “… there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years,” to punish them for their disobedience. (See Deuteronomy 28:23-24 and Leviticus 26:3-4, 18-19.) When chapter 18 opens, almost three rainless years have passed. With this in mind, can you imagine what the very thirsty people must have been thinking when Elijah gave the order to pour what amounted to 12 gallons of very precious water on top of the meat, which no doubt was in short supply as well. Giving of our resources to honor God was never meant to be an easy thing to do. Sacrifice is never easy, especially when it does not make sense, but the blessings and rewards that come from God, as a result, are totally worth it. Are you giving sacrificially to God?
