Messy Family

Deuteronomy 6:8-9
What role does Scripture play in your family’s life? Is it a book you grab on your way out the door to church? Is it the once-a-year rushed retelling of the Christmas Story before gifts are opened? Or is it something more? For initial hearers, these verses meant literally wearing Scripture in phylacteries, small leather boxes containing Hebrew texts, as a reminder to keep the law. But what does this mean for us? Our verses today encourage us to create Scripture-rich environments in which we can live and work. Ideally, families read Scripture together—even when preschoolers are wiggly. Bible stories turn into short devotionals that turn into talks about what we believe about God and why. Scripture should be the basis for all we teach children, even if we don’t quote passages verbatim.
