“Let your conscience be your guide.”
We’ve heard it at school, perhaps from our parents, and even in songs from Disney movies. But the idea that our conscience is trustworthy is a myth. Our conscience doesn’t tell us if we are violating God’s standards; it tells us when we are violating our own standards. Our sin nature clouds our understanding of spiritual truth, and over time, sin can lead to numbness of the heart and calloused spirituality. We must let Scripture be our guide (along with prayer, community, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit).
