Nine months of muteness began with Zechariah’s statement: “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.” In other words—“I’m past my prime. My time has come and gone, Gabriel. It’s too late for me to be blessed with a son.” In what I imagine was disbelief, the angel Gabriel declared, “And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day that this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time.”
What about you? Like Zechariah do you feel your time has come and gone? It’s never too late for God’s blessing. If you’re tempted to respond as Zechariah did, spend some time confessing your unbelief to God. Place your hope again in God and in his ability to bless you in ways you might have given up on.
