28 Days of Letters from Jesus

November 14 – Revelation 2:8-11

The second letter was to the church at Smyrna. Jesus is the speaker, identified from the mosaic found in 1:17-18, "the first and the last.” Jesus commended this congregation because they were faithful in the midst of a two-fold threat. On one hand, the Roman emperor demanded their allegiance. On the other hand, the Jewish community in Smyrna was hostile toward Christians.

Jesus encouraged these believers to remain faithful in the midst of even more suffering to come. The promise of not being hurt by the “second death” is difficult to interpret. Most likely it refers to the reality of the future resurrection of those who follow Jesus. Note this congregation does not receive any rebuke from Jesus.
