Another important question must be asked about mental illness: Is mental illness the result of sin? In our Scripture today, Jesus encountered a man blind from birth. The disciples asked Jesus if the man was born that way because of his own sin or that of his parents. That was the current line of thought in those days. Jesus said that the man’s blindness had nothing to do with sin. Instead, he said this happened “that the works of God might be displayed in him.” How would it change our perspective on mental illness, or any illness, if we stopped asking what we did wrong and started asking, “How will God’s works be displayed in my life?” In your despair, have you beaten yourself up for past mistakes and sins, rather than seeking the healing and power of God? Jesus doesn’t condemn you. He stands ready and willing to show his power in your life today.
