I Commit to Family

Proverbs 31:10-31

Happy Mother’s Day! Mother’s Day is a wonderful day for some and a not-so-wonderful day for others. Some families celebrate their mother sitting shoulder-to-shoulder in worship, celebrating and thanking God for the blessing she is. Other families grieve the loss of their loved ones. Still others experience the sadness of infertility.

Into this scenario, add the Proverbs 31 Woman. For most women, listening to her accolades drives us to our knees. For others, the likelihood of becoming like her is as probable as becoming a superhero. And yet, the truth of Scripture stands. What can mothers and all Christ-followers learn from the Proverbs 31 Woman? First, we can learn to be family-centered. We may not buy a field, but we certainly can manage the family budget. We may never sew our children’s clothes, but we can provide for their needs. Second, we can learn from the Proverbs 31 Woman to be others-centered, care for the needs of the poor and marginalized. Third, we can learn to be God-centered. We can all be people who have a holy awe and fear of the Lord.

Take a minute to pray for the mothers in your life. Thank God for them. If you are struggling with a strained relationship or grieving a loss, lay these things at the feet of Jesus. And then, ask the Lord to search you, revealing the areas in which his Spirit needs to refocus your life on your family, others, and on himself.
