After surviving the scourging, Jesus was then forced to endure a mock royal procession. The crown of thorns and purple robe were followed by further humiliations of beatings and spitting.
The soldiers forced a man from North Africa, Simon of Cyrene, to bear the cross. Men condemned to death were usually forced to carry a beam of the cross, often weighing 30-40 pounds. Though Jesus initially carried this beam, the scourging rendered him unable to carry out the task.
