This passage, which reflects the sovereignty of God, is a sobering word. The self-righteous Pharisees continued to reject the Lord Jesus, relying on their heritage instead. In 8:43, Jesus asks and answers a pointed question. “Why do you not understand my speech? Even because you cannot hear my Word.” It reminds me how blessed we are as believers, and a favorite promise of mine confirms this. “My sheep hear my voice, and they follow me, and I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, who gave them to me, is greater than all, and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand” (John 10:27-29). The truth of our election is further confirmed in Ephesians 1:3-4: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. According as he has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.” When the Lord called us to himself, by his grace through faith, we responded affirmatively and received him into our hearts as Savior and Lord.
