John 6:59-65

How do we obtain salvation? Can we work hard enough? Can we live respectable and charitable enough lives to gain heaven? Jesus says no. Salvation begins and ends with God. Romans 8:29-30 says: "For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified." The Holy Spirit calls us, Christ justified us by his blood, and we are glorified as sons and daughters of God. What a relief it is not up to us to earn our salvation; it is a gift freely given to those who believe. Every time we try to accomplish something on our own, we will fall short. Not that good things can't be accomplished in the flesh—they can. God has given the gift of common grace to all the world as seen in Psalm 145:9: “The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.” But the fullness of life—life abundant—can only be found in Christ.
