John 11:28-37

11:35 is the shortest verse in all the Bible: “Jesus wept.” Just two words, yet it offers such profound truth. Scholars have pondered the question. Jesus and John don’t tell us, but I believe we can say that it demonstrates Jesus’ humanity. Jesus demonstrates emotion here just as he demonstrates his deity in raising Lazarus from the dead. This demonstration of emotion sets Jesus apart from the Greeks who believed gods to have no emotions and no empathy for humans. This means that Jesus understands when we grieve, get frustrated, or demonstrate deep emotions. He understands because he experienced them. Never try to hide your emotions from him, because he understands—because he cares.
