Simeon anticipated. He desired to see the Messiah before his death. God honored Simeon’s anticipation. Simeon held the week-old Jesus on the steps of the temple.
Simeon not only anticipated, he prophesied. This baby would cause “the fall and rise of many” (2:34). What we do with Jesus determines our eternal destiny. Those who reject him will fall. Those who receive him will rise to eternal salvation. Our mission is to make disciples. The rise and fall of many depend upon our willingness to commit ourselves to God’s mission.
Joseph, no doubt, wondered about these words. Listen to a song that suggests Joseph understood Simeon’s words: Joseph’s Lullaby, by Mercy Me.
