Jonah 4:5-6

These closing verses of the book are strange and stilted. Perhaps Jonah set up camp on the eastern side of the city to watch, in case God came to his senses and destroyed the entire population.

God graciously provided for his petulant prophet with a towering plant to provide comfort and shade. This could have been a castor oil plant—a shrub that grows to over 12 feet in height with large, shady leaves. God provided this so the prophet could see. God wanted Jonah to see a city saved. Jonah wanted to see a city leveled.
