Jonah 4
Running ahead of God

Jonah 4:1-2

Jonah distinguishes himself from his fellow Old Testament prophets in that he rebelled against God’s plan. He did this not once, but twice. Rebellion #1 was described in 1:3. Jonah tried to flee from the presence of God by jumping on a ship heading west. Rebellion #2 is found here in 4:2. The prophet is angered that his prophecy (3:4) did not come to pass. He desired the destruction of the people of Nineveh.

He may have appealed to the words of Moses, who said that if a prophet’s prediction did not come true, then one would know God had not spoken (Deuteronomy 18:22). The words of Moses fit a particular time in history. He would not be one to squeeze God into a specific mold for all time.
