What is a Disciple? “Follow Me”

Genesis 12:1-9

In 1878, Reverend W.O. Cushing wrote a prayer that would later become the lyrics to the hymn Follow On. Verse two of this hymn speaks of Jesus’ followers facing times of uncertainty:

Down in the valley with my Savior I would go,
Where the storms are sweeping and the dark waters flow;
With His hand to lead me I will never, never fear,
Dangers cannot fright me if my Lord is near.

I cannot imagine facing more uncertainty than Abram on the day he heard God. God called him to leave everything. Like the disciples, Abram dropped everything and faithfully followed God’s call.

God calls all believers to do the impossible, whether it is preaching the gospel to a football stadium full of people or quietly leading a co-worker to saving faith in Jesus Christ. Neither is possible without faith and obedience. To be a true disciple of Christ, we must step out in faith and boldly proclaim,

Follow! Follow! I will follow Jesus!
Anywhere, everywhere, I will follow on!
Follow! Follow! I will follow Jesus!
Everywhere He leads me I will follow on!
