January 15 – Mark 15:40

Why is he known as James the “less”? This term could mean “small” or “little” making James a man who was short, small in stature. The word could mean someone who was young. If he was born after the more prominent James within the group of disciples, then this would have distinguished him as the younger of the two. Most interpreters think this term refers to his overall influence. When compared with the other James, he was forever in the background. Yet he was one of the twelve Jesus chose.

Today’s brief verse says much. A certain Mary, who was very close to Jesus, was the mother of James the Less. She was with a group of women who stood at the foot of the cross. A mother raised a son who followed Jesus. Now that says a lot.
